McLanahan Corporation expands to Peru thanks to the Hunter Manufacturing Awards
In November 2018 McLanahan Corporation was fortunate enough to have been selected as Hunter Manufacture of the Year. For our organisation this was an enormous achievement, to be recognised amongst our peers after 15 years manufacturing in the region.
The award itself also included the opportunity to join an Austrade mission to promote our business and our solutions abroad and expand our export business. In January 2019 McLanahan Australia became the Mining Centre of excellence for McLanahan Global business and we took this opportunity to Join September 2019 Austrade mission to Peru. Our research began with Austrade through Valeria Beck who guided us through the Austrade “Peru market opportunities Webinar” along with a discussion about the free trade agreement and Various research papers. Our organisation has had previous experiences with Austrade missions, and we knew this was the most effective way to learn about the region, meet high level contacts and reduce the chances of taking the wrong turn or making in effective relationships.
The next step for McLanahan was to engage with David Filmer at Travel World Newcastle who has sponsored the HMA awards for many years and was well known to us as a professional corporate travel advisor. David made travel arrangements that most suited our team and ensured that documentation, transfers and connections were streamlined. Being a well healed South American traveller himself, David offered some unique tips about culture, food, customs, currency and language. All the small details were considered, and the trip went off without a hitch.
The Event itself was much larger than we expected taking up nearly 30,000 square metres of land and including both open area and undercover exhibition space. With 2900 exhibitors it would have been easy to become invisible to the thousands of attendees, but Austrade was well branded using the “Australia Unlimited” brand and offered and excellent two story stand and spaces for meetings. They also organised a special event during the exhibition to ensure key contacts were invited to the sector.
Our brand visibility and our offerings as hunter manufacturers were also highlighted with opportunities for individual companies to present to an audience. Site visits rounded out the education offering of the mission.
The exhibition included many local mining companies as well as some of the larger multinationals, although most attendees spoke Spanish the organisers had dozens of volunteer interpreters to support Austrade interpreters and communication was reasonably painless. After four days and 60,000 attendees we felt we had a good understanding of the market and received a small number of enquiries for both equipment and representation. This was followed up at IMARC in Melbourne in October where Austrade sponsored a presentation and exchange with
Overall the mission was very worthwhile, and we feel other Hunter businesses who are looking to expand into new markets would benefit greatly by engaging with Austrade and taking advantage of the resources, connections and experience they offer.
Our thanks to the Hunter Manufacturing Awards, Hello World Travel Newcastle and Austrade.
